When inflation is wrecking havoc, Maoists are killing people, farmers are committing suicide, a shift to austerity drive will not put Congress in an all win situation. To critics, it is nothing more than vote bank politics and diversionary tactics.
AUSTERITY DRIVE till few days back was an old phrase deprived of its meaning since long. Suddenly it found voice and interestingly full media coverage through the ruling party. Thanks to Sonia Gandhi, who just before the Assembly elections, took initiative to launch this drive. The same was conveyed to and expected of all the party members. The high drama involved in asking two ministers to evacuate five star accommodation had full media coverage .The reason put forward for this austerity drive is that the country is facing economic downturn.
However, to critics, it is nothing more than the vote bank politics and diversionary tactics. Interestingly, the UPA ministers visits to various dalit villages and their having food with them had full media coverage. In a country, which is plagued by insurgency, poverty, drought, flood and myriad other serious issues, people have less time to think that which minister travelled through which class. When crores of rupees are spent on Sonia Gandhi and her family members’ security alone, how will traveling in a lower class help anyway, I totally fail to understand.
Not that I have some anti-Congress notion on my mind, neither I can have anything personal but in India when Inflation is wrecking havoc, Maoists are on a killing spree, farmers are committing suicide, a shift to austerity drive will not put Congress in an all win situation. If it really practices austerity, it needs to be preached and practiced in a real sense. Sans Glam–sham and sans all that hyped media coverage, which even tell the junta that how Rahul refused the cutlery offered to him from executive class while eating, when he took a train. Cosmetic measures will not help. Government needs to think, think and rethink and rework on its definition of austerity.
