Austerity redefined: 12-fold jump in travel expenses of union ministers
An RTI response reveals that tour expenses of union ministers in the financial year 2011-12 are Rs 67, 85, 260 which is twelve times the amount spent on tours during the preceding year.

ONE CAN'T deny the fact that travel and accomodation costs have gone up from the last year, but a 12-fold jump in the expenses is certainly shocking, to say the least. Therefore, an enquiry should be ordered into sudden jump in the travel-bills of union ministers.

Also responsibility should be fixed on some over-spending ministers and they should be expelled from the union cabinet as a caution for future misuse of public funds.

In addition to curbing frequent visits to foreign countries by union ministers, other measures should be taken to reduce their travel-bills and also to make them feel like ordinary citizens. As a rule, ministers should be allowed to travel by economy class only, even during foreign trips. Besides their trips should be allowed only after they submit the detailed report, underlining the need for the trip and how it is in the interest of the country.
