Australia defeats New Zealand, retains Champions Trophy
The Aussies managed to defeat arch-rivals New Zealand in a low scoring final at the Centurion in South Africa. Despite coming under pressure, the Aussies did not panic as Shane Watson and Cameron White chased the target.
DEFENDING CHAMPIONS Australia managed to retain the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy after they defeated arch rival New Zealand by six wickets at the Centurion on Monday (October 5). Australia won the match with the help of a brilliant Shane Watson century, while chasing 201 in the stipulated 50 overs.

Watson made 129 runs in 105 balls and remained unbeaten as he and Cameron White shared a 128-run stand to steer their team to victory. The Aussies reached the target of 206 runs in 45.2 overs, while losing 4 wickets.

Earlier, batting first New Zealand found it difficult to make runs as the Aussies bowled with steady line and length. Scoring runs proved to be a big struggle especially against the spinners as Martin Guptill and Aaron Redmond tool almost 15 overs to score 60 runs, making it clear that runs will not come easy on the difficult Centurion pitch.

Nathan Hauritz bowled brilliantly for the Aussies and claimed three wickets for 37 runs.

Chasing a small target, it was expected that Australia would easily win the match but New Zealand bowlers Shane Bond and Kyle Mills had other plans in the mind. The duo struck early claiming two early wickets and maintained pressure on the Aussies, who were stuck at 34 for 2 in 15 overs.

It was however Shane Watson and Cameron White, who came to the rescue of Aussies and did not allow panic to set in as they together shared a stand of 128 runs.
Watson hit two big sixes to wrap up the match, much to the delight of the Aussies.
