Authorities shirk responsibilities over constructing an underpass on Delhi- Gurgaon Expressway
Finally the U-turn on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway near Ambience Mall has been closed. The residents of nearly 500 flats in Ambience Island, Lagoon and Caittriona apartments, now have to cross the toll, head to Rajokri flyover, where they have to take a U-turn and then have to bear the burnt of heavy traffic and jams.
''The residents near Ambience have to travel three kilometers to take the Rajokri flyover, which is a wastage of fuel as well as time. Closing the U-turn will add some other problems like School buses will not come to the area, and the parents have to take their kids to the other side by crossing the expressway. People working in Udyog Vihar will have to face similar problems. Even the commercial vehicles coming from Gurgaon have to enter Delhi to be able to come here.” says Swaran Parihar, President, Ambience Lagoon Apartments Welfare Association.
The residents of the nearby area have written to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) over blocking the U-turn near the mall but NHAI has finally closed the U-turn today. BS Singla, chief General Manager at NHAI said, ''U-turns are not allowed on the expressway, as it becomes an accidental spot. According to Special publication 99 on Highway rules of India, 'their can be no U-turn on expressways.''
When asked about an alternative for this U-turn, he said, ''constructing an underpass, is the best solution for it. And as the U-turn is a great advantage for the Ambience mall and DLF, so both of them should share and construct an underpass there.'' But he did not give any clear details about constructing an underpass by the government.
Sanjay Roy, spokesperson from DLF refused to comment anything about it, saying “We are involved in this, and we don't want to say anything about it.''Even the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) is not ready to say anything about the closure of U-turn near the mall. ''We are not the concerned authority for this. Please call Delhi police, Haryana police or NHAI for any information on it.''
No one is ready to take the responsibility on this issue. Everyone is pointing the finger at someone else. But finally the sufferers are the common people who are staying nearby. They have to take a lengthy route to reach their destinations and this is very unfair and impractical proposition for the residents in this part of Gurgaon.
