Avoid water accumulation during rainy season
Whenever housing colonies or commercial colonies are planned for the future, topmost priority should be given to drainage of monsoon water from getting accumulated. This kind of clogging leads to unimaginable loss of time, resources, and personal and coll

IT IS seen during rainy season or monsoon season or whenever it rains heavily, that some of the roads in residential areas, commercial areas and on highways, are clogged with heavy water restricting not only traffic movement but also posing as a health hazard.

If the water is allowed to stagnate beyond a specified period, automatically many pests including disease-causing mosquitoes begin breeding and thrive. It is also seen that some of the automobile vehicles including commercial vehicles require more maintenance if they are passing through accumulated water on roads.

It has been observed in some housing and commercial colonies during monsoon season, that if rain pours continuously for two to three days, there is so much of water clogging in front of each residence that people find it difficult to come out from their houses. Around 50% or more of the commercial movements gets restricted causing hardship to people to buy the essentials.

Three types of drainage of water systems are found to be functioning in different areas – e.g. (a) sewage outlet drains where accumulated water on road surface could get into once the lid of the sewage drain outlet is opened up; (b) pumping out the accumulated water where there are no other ways for the water to seep into as an outlet (c) on the sideways of the roads water could flow easily through one ft’ to two ft’ width and two to three ft. Depth outlets running parallel along with the roads and eventually these water goes into the main master outlet drainage system.

From the above, the system under (c) seems to be giving satisfactory results. However, under system (a), if the concerned sewage person do not turn up in time, in spite of having outlets, there would no way of opening up the lid and under system (c) pumping of water is done only in VIP areas if the situation demands. In colonies, where there are no systems as mentioned above, life becomes very hard if water gets accumulated for longer periods.

Policy makers are requested to let every planner of either a housing project or a commercial project or a highway road project which includes construction of bridges and other vital infrastructures, to give topmost priority to include a good doable system of water drainage during heavy rains or monsoon season. Out of the above suggested three methods, the one method in (c) seems to be somewhat okay. Models working in developed countries should be studied in detail and adopted by the planners. Therefore, the law governing this particular issue should be redefined if necessary to either mandate for having good doable water outlets in all the upcoming colonies, also upgrading the present ones for the better and also introducing some sort of doable method in those places where there no system present for the accumulated water to drain out.

Life of a common man will become much easier especially in monsoon, rainy season or during heavy rains if water is not allowed to accumulate in streets or towns or housing colonies commercial colonies. This subject needs topmost attention and priority by all concerned for introducing the best of the methods suited.
