DIVISIONAL ADMINISTRATION Kashmir in collaboration with National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) launched a one-week programme to create awareness about disasters, especially earthquakes and conduct earthquake mock drills in all districts of Kashmir Division.
Inaugurating the programme, Mehraj Ahmed Kakroo, Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar said that in the event of disasters the response time plays the most crucial role. Srinagar and its adjoining areas fall in Seismic Zone V therefore it is vulnerable to earthquakes and major disasters. He urged officers to update the disaster preparedness plans of their respective departments and to ensure that they are acted upon in the event of disasters.
He said that Divisional Administration Kashmir had launched the disaster preparedness week where mock drills on earthquakes would also be conducted. He said such programmes will create awareness about disasters. He said during any disaster, it is the people who are the first responders, therefore, it is necessary to involve the community and conduct trainings and awareness programmes for them.
Brigadier (Dr.) B.K. Khanna, Senior Specialist (Trainings) National Disaster Management Authority Govt. of India made an elaborate presentation and laid out a mock earthquake scenario and defined roles for each officer. Mohammed Akbar Ganai, Addl. Dy. Commissioner Srinagar and CEO District Disaster Management Authority welcomed the participants. Earlier Aamir Ali, Coordinator Disaster Management Kashmir & OSD with Divisional Commissioner Kashmir gave a detailed resume of the activities planned for the disaster preparedness week. He said that Naseem Lanker, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, has approved that a mock drill on earthquake be held in Srinagar on 16th March at Hotel Heemal on the busy Boulevard Road where officers from Budgam and Ganderbal will also participate. On 17th and 18th March, earthquake mock drill will be held at Baramulla where officers from Kupwara and Bandipore will also attend. Mock drill will be held at Anantnag on 19th and 20th March, where officers from Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam will also participate. Fire Service, Police, Health and Medical Education Dept, Civil Defence and senior district and divisional authorities are expected to display their preparedness plans, during the mock drills. School safety awareness programme was later held at Tyndale Biscoe School and Mallinson Girls School where Brigadier Khanna andhid wife, both made presentations to around 400 students. Captains, Vice-Captains, Helpers and Class Monitors, both boys and girls were imparted awareness cum training. The students and staff members were made aware of various disasters and preparedness measures and precautions required to be taken before, during and after a disaster, especially earthquakes. Director ,Tyndal Biscoe School, Parwez Samuel Kaul and Principal, Mallinson Girls School and Kashmir Valley School along with their staff members were taught the procedure to prepare school disaster plans. Posters and IEC material prepared by Disaster Management Kashmir was also distributed.
