Ayush Ministry booklet asks pregnant women to abstain from sex: Is the government promoting pseudoscience?
Ahead of International Day of Yoga, the Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy under Ayush Ministry has come out with a 'Mother and Child Care' booklet advocating yoga and spirituality for pregnant women to have a healthy (and sanskari) child.

The booklet advices women not to have sex after conception and imbibe spiritual thoughts during pregnancy; have vegetarian food; keep 'good' company; and hang some 'beautiful' pictures in the bedroom.

The book also recommends to pregnant women to study the life stories of great people or 'mahapurshas' and stay away from negative emotions or 'vikaras'.

The booklet has been released by minister of state for Ayush Shripad Naik in the run-up to International Day of Yoga to be celebrated in June-end.

I personally believe the book is promoting pseudoscience to create myths and misconceptions. The information given in the form of advice is unscientific.

Science has three facets, namely, objectivity, reliability and verifiability. All three are missing from the booklet published by the research institute founded for promotion of alternative medicines, I think.

It is expected of the government not to promote pseudoscience in form of unsubstantiated statements, irrational thoughts and belief-thinking based on practices which are constrained by valid scientific methods.
