IT HAPPENED way back in 1992 – December 6, 1992 is a day of shame for India, a country that boasts of its secular ideologies. On that day, section of people caused harm to the Babri Masjid (Babri Mosque), a place of worship in Ayodha with the intention of creating a divide among different communities.
They wanted to tear apart the secular fabric of India and the fanatics descended on the Babri mosque and demolished it while the leaders watched – one group of leaders egged them on, the other preferred to turn away their eyes. The outcome was not a pleasant one and its repercussions are felt even today. The intention of the demolition was to polarise the electorate on lines of religion and the ploy succeeded. The NDA Government came to power in 1998 led by the BJP but could not complete the full term. However, they realigned forces and came back to power in 1999 to complete the full tenure of five years. Once the novelty and dazzle wore off and people realised their follies, the NDA gradually faded in the distance. But, the Babri Masjid issue remains alive.
The Liberhan Commission that was set up to enquire into the case has submitted its findings only now – after 17 long years. Strange that no one has been held directly responsible – the logic is probably not to ruffle any feathers.
