POLLING BEGAN for three Assembly seats in Punjab on Monday with people turning out in large numbers at polling stations in the morning to escape the stifling afternoon heat. Jalalabad, Kahnuwan and Banur Assembly seats went to the polls today with both the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Congress putting in maximum effort to outdo each other.
The three seats are going in for by-polls after the Kahnuwan and Jalalabad MLAs were elected to the Lok Sabha; a third seat fell vacant following the unfortunate death of th Banur MLA Kanwaljit Singh, in a road accident. The Jalalabad seat in Ferozepur has become the focus of attention of poll watchers as SAD Chief Sukhbir Singh Badal is the candidate from this assembly segment. Singh had to fight the election from this seat after failing to enter the State Assembly within six months of assuming the post which required him to resign from the post of deputy chief minister.
Taking into account the high stakes and tension between SAD and the Congress, the Election Commission has ensured the deployment of security forces that include 15 paramilitary companies.
