Badminton Federation makes skirts mandatory for players
BWF has introduced mandatory dress code from May 2011 to make the game more glamorous. But many players do not agree with this new rule.
THE BADMINTON World Federation (BWF) has introduced a new dress code whereby all female shttlers have been asked to wear skirts from May 1. However, those players who want to wear shorts can do the same but only underneath a skirt.

Ostensibly, this decision has been taken by the authorities to add to the glamour quotient on the lines of tennis. Badminton authorities feel that asking female players to wear skirts will definitely attract viewers to the game.

But, whatever may be the reason, wearing skirts should not be made a mandatory rule as it will be unfair towards those players, who wear track suits or shorts in tournaments. Many Pakistani players prefer wearing track suits according to their culture and it would be wrong to force them to wear skirts.

Although Indian players may not have much objection to the rule, but again making such a rule manadatory leads to an undercurrent of discontentment. The players are also of the opinion that the Badminton Association should go for some other measures to make the game interesting.

The association will also have to look into the sensibilites of Islamic nations, which are opposed to Western dresses.
