Bail plea of Kashmir cops rejected in Shopian case
A Sessions Court rejected the bail plea of four police officers arrested in connection with Shopian rape and murder case, which rocked the Valley. Bodies of Asiya Jan and her sister-in-law Nilofer Jan were recovered under suspicious circumstances
A SESSIONS on Thursday (August 6), rejected the bail plea of four police officers arrested in connection with Shopian rape and murder case, which rocked the Kashmir valley. Rejecting the bail please, Principal District Session and Sessions Judge, Tauqueer Ahmad said it would be 'premature to grant bail to the police officers at this juncture.

The Sessions judge also observed that bail to the police officers could hamper the probe being conducted by the Special Investigation Team of the Jammu and Kashmir police in the murder of two women in Shopian.

Bodies of Asiya Jan and her sister-in-law Nilofer Jan were recovered from a stream in Shopian under suspicious circumstances on May 30. Violent protests erupted in the entire Valley after the police refused to register a case of rape and murder.

The four police officers were arrested by the state police after a one-man inquiry commission recommended action against them for tampering crucial evidence related to the case. The four including SP Javed Iqbal Matoo, DSP Rohit Baskotra, Station House Officer (SHO) Shafiq Ahmad and the sub inspector, Gazi Abdul Karim are in judicial custody since July 30.
