There have been quite some movies now in Bollywood about the protagonist who is (are) confused – Dil Chahta Hai, Lakshya, Rang De Basanti – made by the kids (new directors on the marquee)

Wake up Sid is baked (read made) by one such kid, Ayaan Mukherjee. WUS is more like an extension to Lakshya – the same rich brat, sleeping till way past noon, the morning call not being a ‘good morning’ butthe servant’s name Chhotu. Though, the similarity ends here. For Lakshya effectively used the defence-forces (army) as a metaphor for protagonists’ discovery of self. WUS has a simple narrative about
protagonists’ self-discovery.

Sid (Ranbir Kapoor) is the spoilt brat of Supriya Pathak and Anupam Kher. He chills out with his gang of friends. At the farewell party, he is introduced to Aisha (Konkana) who is completely opposite to him but yet they strike a firm bonding.

Sid feels that he has fallen in love with Aisha, but Aisha is
attracted to a suave, editor-in-chief (Rahul Khanna).

Meanwhile, Sid too is introduced to Tanya (Kainaz Motivala) and a seductress, Sonia (Kashmera Shah).

One day, Anupam gets quite angry on Ranbir and blasts him which results into Ranbir leaving the home.

How Konkana helps Ranbir realize his potential and makes him a responsible man forms the narrative.

Wake Up Sid is essentially a niche film that will work only with a select audience even in multiplexes. The film moves at a leisurely pace and it actually grows on you, if you are interested.

What rocks the movie:
Performances, everyone is very good in the movie.
Production-design has a rich feel to it.
Direction, a couple of scenes do touch the audiences.

What chucks the movie:
Screenplay needed to have more conflict and interesting situations.
Dialogues could have been wittier.
Editing could have been crisper.

Verdict:
WUS is a niche film that will only appeal to the intelligent
audiences, still it is a much better watch and more worthy watch than
the torture the audience might endure, if they opt for Do Knot
Disturb.
