The deadlock between the developing and developed nations over the leading of the emission drive, for taking preventive and corrective measures, has already been delayed. These two blocks are busy in holding each other responsible for global warming.
The breakthrough in Bali conference is not at all a breakthrough at least for the moment. One would be myopic in saying that the conference has achieved anything or has gone at least one step forward. The achievement in Bali is not so important triumph. The whole efforts of drafting and adopting the Bali climate deal in the form of a treaty and then implemented unconditionally by each member of the UNO is nothing but a waste of time.
Prior to this, there was a Kyoto Protocol calling all the developed nations to reduce the green house emission. The world knows what happened to Kyoto Protocol and how shrewdly the US rejected it. Though agreed on the draft, the same US this time also tried to resist the conference on reaching any consensus. The major question is that what forced them to change their mind all of a sudden? The US administration had drawn much flak from all the quarters when it had categorically rejected to honour the Kyoto Protocol. The world has no concrete step to help everyone in reducing the greenhouse gas emissions and the US is the main culprit behind the delay.
The deadlock between the developing and developed countries over the leading of the emission drive has already been delayed in taking any preventive and corruptive measure. These two blocks were busy in holding each other responsible for global warming. The developed countries took advantage of this opportunity and developed greener technologies to reduce emissions. However, the developing countries have no option but to use ‘traditional resources’ due to the lack of fund to meet the contingency.
The developed nations held the ongoing process of growth in several developing countries as responsible for global warming. However, the manufacturing units of the several multinational giants, based in these industrialised nations, are among the main contributors of the greenhouse gases. The developed countries have also claimed that the burning of fossil fuels in developing countries especially China and
India is the main reason behind the overheating of the earth. To stop the burning of fossil fuel one needs to invest in technologies and in most cases the developed nations, owing to their imperialistic mindset, have resisted the transfer of environmental friendly technologies to the developing countries.
Today developing countries have become a favourite destination for dumping hazardous waste of developed nations. Both, India and China, are victims of such conspiracies, which allow any company from the industrialised nations to recover the price of potentially hazardous wastes. Many such technologies, which are banned in the developed countries, are being used in the developing countries. The transfer of such technologies may lead to the closing of MNCs or make it difficult for them to compete with domestic companies. That’s why the industrialised nations have resisted the movement of greener technologies to the developing countries.
Contributions to the greenhouse effect by the developing countries includes developed countries’ share as well. What is being produced, sold and accumulated in Asia is partly owned and shared by the West as well. So there has to be a holistic approach to the problem of global warming which in Al Gore’s word is REAL.
