Bangladesh Fire: Over 100 killed and scores others injured
Over 100 people have been killed and scores others sustained injuries in a devastating fire which raced through several apartment complexes in Bangladeshi capital Dhaka.

OVER 100 people have been killed and scores others sustained injuries in a devastating fire which raced through several apartment complexes in Bangladeshi capital Dhaka.

An official said that the blaze began after an electrical transformer exploded, engulfing housing blocks and shops in flames in Najirabazar area in the old district of Nimtoli late Thursday night. According to firefighters they have now got the blaze under control.

According to officials at the scene and hospital doctors at least 104 people had died, and more than 100 others were injured in the fatal fire. Many guests of a wedding party on the roof of a building were also included in the victims. Some sources say the fire spread to at least 20 apartment complexes.

According to Bangla Vision television the rescue effort was being hampered since the area is crammed with buildings and roads are narrow.

Talking to a news agency fire department chief Abu Nayeem said, “There were shops selling chemicals on the ground floor, which were caught by the fire as it spread very quickly." He added, “The temperature and fumes became unbearable because of the chemicals. We struggled to get inside due to the narrow stairways of the very old buildings.”

Imrul Hasan, a doctor at the burns unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), told a news channel that he had personally counted 45 bodies laid out on a road near the site of the fire, just 200m from the hospital. He said, “The number of dead is rising every moment.”

Although fires are common in Dhaka, analysts say this is the largest and most deadly for many years.

Expressing shock and condolences to the families of the victims Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ordered authorities to provide all medical support to the injured. The government has also ordered an investigation into the incident.
