Bangladesh goes to polls: All eyes on the south Asian nation
Eyes of the world are now fixed on Bangladesh as the south Asia nation went out to vote on Sunday to elect its next national government. Amidst sporadic violence thousands of people came out from their homes to polling stations for exercising their franchises.

As per reports mammoth security arrangements had been made to ensure smooth conduction of the elections. The results of the elections would have great impact on geo-politics of entire Asia, as the national and international political analysts observe.

India has been enjoying friendly relationship with the populous neighbouring country as it has been governed by the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League for last 10 years. Since Hasina is the daughter of Banga-bandhu Mujibur Rahman, under whose leadership erstwhile East Pakistan snatched its freedom by dint of military help of India, she has been maintaining cordial relationship with India at all fronts like diplomatic, bi-lateral, trade and commerce, among others despite growing influence of China in the South Asia. In the two stints of her prime ministership several pro-Pakistan leaders were sent to jail either on charges of murder/mass killing during the country's freedom struggle or for corruption. And many were sent to gallows.

Begum Khaleda Zia, former prime minister and the supremo of the main opposition party Bangladesh Nationalist Party, had been convicted by the country's higher judiciary in a case of two charity organisations' funds misappropriation and sent to jail a few months earlier. Since then she has been lodging in an ancient jail. But her party and pro-Pakistan leaders apart from the religious fundamentalists have joined hands to defeat Hasina's Awami League in the current elections. Hence, this time PM Hasina has to handle huge challenge from the oppositions.

The pro-Pakistan forces, reportedly, have tried their best to take the advantage of anti-incumbency wind. However, as per international media and political analysts' assumptions Hasina could trounce the oppositions as her government has done lot of pro-people as well as developmental works. Some international associations' data revealed that the Hasina government has dragged out millions of people from abject poverty. Despite that the challenge in front of her is large.
