Bangladeshi jehadis plan to dominate the North East
Bangladeshi jehadis wish to dominate the North East through demographic invasion. They would not indulge in any major violence in these parts, as it would divert the attention of the GoI and affect their larger game plan of cultural invasion.
THE THREAT to Assam and other parts of the North East from the Bangladesh based jehadi groups cannot be overlooked. Security agencies are of the view that such groups might not like to indulge in any major violence in this part in near future as it would divert the attention of the GoI and affect their larger game plan. The jehadi groups wish to dominate the area through demographic invasion. However, sources warned that the government should not become complacent and all out efforts must be launched to secure the international borders.

Talking to reporters, highly placed security sources admitted that it is a matter of concern for India that jehadi groups have established strong roots in Bangladesh. There have been instances when jehadi elements from Bangladesh managed to enter India from the neighbouring country to create disturbances by taking advantage of the porous border. According to reports, Pakistan based terrorist groups including Laskar-e-Toiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) also brought in their cadres to Bangladesh to enter India to avoid the border in the western sector. Members of the Indian Mujahideen were also taken to Pakistan through Bangladesh for training in recent times, sources added.

However, sources admitted that till date, the GoI has not been able to take effective steps to secure the international border to prevent such activities. Senior officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) including the secretary, border management visited the international border to see the situation on the ground. But, effective steps are still not in place. Sources pointed out that even after realising the danger, the Centre has not taken any decision to deploy additional forces along the international border to improve vigil and only the existing personnel of the BSF have been asked to increase vigil. There is urgent need for creating a second line of defence all along the international border with Bangladesh to detect anyone who manages to sneak past the BSF personnel, but that has not been done.

Sources said that only in Assam, a decision was taken to create a second line of defence, but that is yet to become fully operational. A strong second line of defence should be created not only in Assam but also all along the international border with Bangladesh to effectively prevent infiltrators and elements of anti-India forces from sneaking into India. There is urgent need to improve the quality of the fencing along the border with Bangladesh as was done in case of the border with Pakistan.

Security sources pointed out that the situation in Assam is totally different from elsewhere in the country, which faced jehadi attacks in recent months. Sources said that the main game plan of the jehadi and fundamentalist forces in Assam is to dominate the area through demographic invasion and they may achieve their goal if the present situation continues.

Moreover, the local militant groups are indulging in violence and there is no need for the jehadis to risk their manpower by indulging in reckless violence. If the jehadi groups indulge in any major violence in Assam and other parts of North East, the attention of the government would be drawn to this part. The vigil along the international border and also in the border areas will definitely increase considerably, which will seriously affect the game plan of the jehadis of dominating the area through demographic invasion.

However, if the vigil along the border with Bangladesh is increased, it will also restrict the movement of the jehadis to India from Bangladesh. The security forces should never be complacent and if they face any provocation, they may strike in a big way, sources pointed out.

At the same time, sources said that the situation in other parts of the country, which faced jehadi attacks in recent times like Mumbai, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Delhi is quite different, as the jehadi groups cannot expect to dominate those places with demographic invasion and thus, in all these places they are trying to strike to create terror in a big way. Whenever any jehadi member is arrested in one place they start hitting out in other places not only to make their presence felt but also to create disturbance in India, sources added.
