Barack Obama and 'Incredible' India

IT IS interesting that during his three day high voltage visit to India, US President Barack Obama used almost one adjective 'Incredible' repeatedly in practically every public event he spoke. In all it came up at least 19 times in six of his seven public events. He left no stone unturned to prove his 'incredible' admiration for India, its people and growing expertise.

From his very first public address at Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai, he used this ten letter 'incredible' word seven times. He called Mumbai a symbol of 'the incredible energy and optimism that defines India in the 21st century' on 26/11 terrorist attack on the city. When he sat with business best heads from two countries for a closed-door meeting, he again did not forget to say this word and thank the Indian government in the presence of Commerce Minister Anand Sharma for the 'incredible hospitality'.

At his next stop at the business conference organised by the US-India Business Council, the US President once again thanked the people of Mumbai and India for their 'incredible hospitality'. His favorite adjective on the trip to India returned with urging the two business communities of US and India to push their partnership to a new level. He said that 'these are steps we can take together to strengthen the economic ties between our nations ties that hold incredible promise for our people and our future'.

During the 50 minute interaction with students at St Xavier’s College, he was casual and informal but that did not stop him from peppering with some more 'incredibles'.

In Delhi after he was given ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhawan, he said that he and his wife came to India to strengthen what is already an 'incredible friendship between the United States and India'. At a joint press conference, he again spoke about the 'incredible warmth and incredible hospitality' with which he had been received in India. While replying to a query, he said the partnership between the two countries was 'incredibly important' and the new ties can be 'incredibly powerful, incredibly important'. However, the word did not find a single mention in his thirty-five minute speech to Parliament even though he gave MPs several other occasions to cheer him.

Reporters, commentators and political analysts in the US and around the world, who have tracked Obama have analysed his preference for words and phrases in the past. They said be it healthcare, gay rights or foreign affairs etc. President loves to utter the word 'incredible' many times without any hesitation.
