BBC iPlayer would not be available on Xbox 360, after the deal between iPlayer provider BBC and Microsoft broke down. The latter had been insisting on charging for the service.
FANS WAITING for the BBC iPlayer on XBox 360, have become disappointed, after XBox 360 provider Microsoft and iPlayer provider BBC were not able to settle on an agreement. As per sources, the two parties were not comfortable to the deal, as BBC was not happy with Microsoft's strategy of charging for its content.
These sources have explained that Microsoft wanted to charge its XBox 360 users for access to the platform, ensuring that only those with Xbox Live Gold accounts could access the additional content services apart from subscribing to these services. The public service provider, on the other hand, wanted to make the BBC iPlayer available on all entertainment platforms. Further, they can't charge the British for the BBC iPlayer separately, as it is already a part of the licence fee.The deal with Microsoft has been in the works for sometime now.
Meanwhile, BBC has already inked the deal for the iPlayer with two other gaming consoles, Nintendo Wii and Sony Playstation 3, who have agreed to provide owners with free access to the BBC iPlayer. BBC relaunched its service on Wii earlier this month and has its own iPlayer channel. As per a spokesman for the broadcaster, BBC iPlayer was a success on PS3 and its re-launch on Nintendo Wii, has also been well appreciated. Seeing this, they wished to put it up on Xbox 360 too, but the deal didn't work. Microsoft has given no statements in this regard. There is specualation that BBC has also approached MySpace and Channel 4 with an offer for the BBc iPlayer. On the other hand, there are rumours that Microsoft is in talks with Video on Demand provider Channel 4 for the Xbox 360, with a similar deal.
