BCCI doesn't need Arjuna 'ill-informed' advice!!
Poor Ranatunga appears to be too bogged down in silly cricket to realise that BCCI possesses more wisdom than his 'narrow-minded' rationale. When he agrees that Twenty20 generates much-needed money, how can he advise giving priority to Test cricket?

THE STARS of Sri Lankan spinners Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis are obviously in their most favourable position. They have been enjoying very good times, with world-class batsmen reeling against their bowling magic. The duo bagged 19 wickets in just about four sessions of play in the just concluded Colombo Test against India. That bundled out the whole bunch of visiting heroes. Not once, but twice.

Indias third heaviest loss, the massive innings and 239-run defeat in the first Test, can obviously be blamed on their bad (astronomical, not cricket!) stars. Hopefully, the heroes will be turning the tables in the second Test at Galle.

Sri Lankas fluke victory appears to have gone to the head of Arjuna Ranatunga, their former captain, rather too strongly! The Sri Lankan has put the blame squarely on Indian batsmen for the humiliation. He said the heroes lacked focus and were playing Test cricket in Twenty20 mode.

Speaking to an Indian newspaper, Ranatunga commented that the Indian cricket icons were not prepared for Test cricket. He added, “The way the Indians have played this Test is an eye-opener not just for us, but for all cricket-playing countries... They dealt with this match like a Twenty20 game.”

Arjuna went to the extent of saying that playing with Indians could spoil the game of Lankan players. He thought that they may wander away from their priority of putting the countrys interests and honour first. The former Sri Lanka captain stressed that playing Test cricket and representing ones country should be the primary goal, while admittedly the Twenty20 generates much-needed money.

Focusing on the Twenty20 game can only be satisfying in the short-term, according to the Lankan mentor. “If the game is not protected, we are all in for a major disaster,” he opined. He felt that Indian batsmen are not too focused and feared that playing them repeatedly may lead this weakness to creep into their cricket. He categorically declared, “That is something I dont want to happen. ”

Ranatungas advice to Board of Control of Cricket of India (BCCI) is to focus more on Tests than on Twenty20s. He reasoned that only the Test performance would be determining the future of the game in a country. He warned, “If the Indians keep getting their priorities wrong, they will go down ranking-wise. Ultimately, it is the rank that is very important.”

Poor Ranatunga! He doesnt realise that the bosses in BCCI possess much more wisdom than his narrow-minded rationale. When he agrees that Twenty20 generates much-needed money, how can he advise giving priority to Test cricket? The Lankan star appears to be too bogged down in silly cricket to be informed enough about India of today!

Obviously, Arjuna did not watch proceedings in Indian Parliament last week. We are a country where dangling wads of currency can make lawmakers swing like a pendulum between supporting and opposing something as important as nuclear option! Whod care about something as trivial as the future of cricket?
