Be a giver and not a grabber
In life one needs peace. Peace of mind is attained by giving things away to the poor and the needy. By grabbing what belonged to others, you are inviting trouble both mental and physical. Man needs Peace and not Problems.
INDEED A pleasant surprise that the silver medal bearing an image of Peter the Great that blonged to the last Czar of Russia, Nicholas II, was recovered by the authorities of the United States and handed over to the Russian authorities in Moscow. A perfect example of growing trust and cooperation between the two countries that never saw eye to eye until the end of the cold war.

But the Mother of Surprises that walks away with the cake is : The Hermitage Museum at St Petersburg, Russia has lost over 200 artefacts of rare quality and historical value over a period of time. Only 25 of these have been recovered so far and restored to the museum. Apparently the private collectors are having a rollicking time with rarest of the rare collections in their private possession.

They do not realise that they run the risk of losing these priceless possessions through theft. Should they resist the thieves, it may turn into an armed robbery with a high risk of loss of life. I wonder if possessing stolen objects of art of priceless historical value and running the high risk of losing life or limb or both, is worth the trouble. The illegal collectors cannot put them up for sale through a public auction because the State agencies would seize the artefacts and bring the so called collectors to book.

MAKE POSSESSIONS PUBLIC

It is my sincere and friendly advice, as a non-practising lawyer, to the illegal collectors of artefacts to return their priceless possessions to the State as early as possible. Once you make up your mind to do so, please do not waste time, not even a second, in executing your plan of return. Let the thought be converted into action post haste lest you change your mind. Moreover, the artefact may be comparatively safer in a museum than in your house. More people will have an opportunity to view them and appreciate in a museum and you will be saved the bother of inviting bigwigs to your house for a private view. Having the high and mighty in your own house to view the stolen artefacts would be risky indeed from many angles.

The Vedas enjoin on Mankind to tread on the path of righteousness. To have steely determination to be a good Human Being, one should give away own possessions in charity, what to say of possessing objects belonging to others; Not hurt others voluntarily and Move in company of the Wise and the Learned.. In other words one should be a good human being to have peace of mind. One who has stolen artefacts from museums or palaces can never have peace of mind and can never be a good Human Being.

LAW AND MORALITY

Law, the long arms of law will not spare a law breaker. Law will catch hold of a law breaker, irrespective of his or her station in life and society. Law is Above All. However, the thieves and robbers have devised ways and means of breaking Law and not getting caught. Help comes to them from lawyers and politicians. Life is a complex game and there are many ifs and buts in pursuing the right path of life.

Morality steps in where law fails. Be it in the Armed Forces or in civil life, Morals are given a high priority for a life of peace. MORAL IS TO PHYSICAL AS TEN IS TO ONE - that is the maxim for both the General and the Jawan or the foot soldier. In a battle, when the chips are down, what matters most is the Moral Courage that a combatant has. A battle may be won even in the face of heavy odds if the soldier has moral courage. Lack of it may result in defeat despite all the latest weapons in one’s armoury.

Likewise in life, an individual needs moral courage to solve myriad problems of day to-day life. Moral courage is acquired through thought and action based on the teachings of scriptures like the Vedas. It is constant practice of good thoughts and action that make a man or a woman a person of determination. It is determination and moral courage that combine to take a good and strong man's personality many notches up and give him or her a standing in social set up where fellow human beings look up to him or her for guidance.

He is the Beacon Light in the dark and dreary sea to navigate ship of life. BE A GIVER. Your destination will be easy to reach and you will find it rewarding to guide other human beings too to reach the port of life safe and sound. It will indeed be an achievement of a lifetime for you and your loved ones.

HEAVEN AND HELL

The concept of Heaven and Hell has gripped the thought process of human beings like nothing else. Perhaps the leaders of men and women who wished to guide their followers walk on the path of Righteousness, floated the theory of Heaven and Hell. Those human beings who do good deeds throughout life become entitled to enter the Heaven on demise in this mundane world. Many incentives were added by many to motivate men and women do good to others. Hell was the place recommended for criminals and sinners in Life after Death. Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati formulated concept of Heaven and Hell based on his study of the Vedas.

The Maharishi said that in the theory of Karma, each action of a soul would be rewarded or punished and both will be carried out in this world. There is no waiting and no queue.

Yogeshwar Shri Krishna advised Arjuna on the battle field to wage war as that was his Dharma. If he were killed in action, his soul would go to Heaven. If he won the war of Mahabharat, he would enjoy the riches of this world. So, a Kshatriya or a man of the warrior class must fight a battle to preserve and protect Dharma or a life of righteousness and defeat Adharma or violation of principles of Righteousness as prescribed by the Vedas.

In this context, Heaven is interpreted as the talk of the town eulogising the conduct of an individual in the discharge of his duty. An inaction or failure to do the duty is like living in Hell or a Narak as opposed to Swarg.

Summarising this Vedic philosophy of life, it may be said that Giving away in charity is Dharma. On the contrary, grabbing what is not yours is Adharma. Dharma is appreciated and eulogised; Adharma is denounced and despised. Living a life of fragrance by following Dharma is enjoined on men and women by the Vedas and let us live and swear by tenets of the Vedas.
