One can go on renouncing without plugging into one?s innermost core, the powerhouse of understanding. If it's not plugged in there, nothing much will happen except tiring one out. It's understanding that makes the difference, all the difference.
RELIGION CANNOT be realised by reason alone. If that were to be true, then many a great philosophers would not have died miserable deaths or suffered insanity. You may not realise, but if you look into their biography, you are sure to wonder, ’philosophers, mad?’ Why? What can be the reason? Thinking, reasoning, philosophising all their lives, their words seemingly so true, and yet falling short of realising the truth... does it make one mad? Then, is philosophy dispensable, avoidable?Be natural, be spontaneous, be aware, be religious.
Reality cannot be avoided. Forget theories and listen to the facts. If you are miserable, then misery has to be looked into. When you are angry, then that anger has to be looked into. You feel sexual? Then forget about what others say about it; just look into it yourself. It is your life and you have to live it.
Don’t borrow. Never be secondhand. God loves people who are firsthand. He has never been known to love carbon copies. By the word original, I mean finding a solution for oneself, because it is in our problem that the solution is hidden. The problem is just a seed. If one goes into it deeply, the solution will sprout out of it. Our ignorance is the seed, and when we delve into it deeply, knowledge will flower out of it. Though the solution is not instant and may take time but once the process is understood, the problem cannot remain unsolved, or unresolved. Nature does not allow it. If you were to sometime count your blessings in the earnest, you’ll be surprised - oh, what fantastic coincidences! Nothing, can I claim of my own doing, then whose? Mystery and the thankfulness to whosoever it was!! God’s then? Can’t say! Again a mystery . . . everything seems to become something else that we never thought of! That’s what the whole of modern psychology says: if you give up passion, you will become angry. It simply shows that the energy that was being released through sexuality, passion, is no longer finding an outlet. It is stuck inside, and you become more and more angry. You must have observed that when you are sexually fulfilled you feel less angry. The energy is transformed into taking subtler forms. Anger is more subtle than sex. Anger you renounce, greed remains. Greed is more subtle than anger. And greed you renounce; then vainglory, ego, remains. Ego is very, very subtle now. And you try to drop that but now the theories, the philosophies, the doctrines, they remain. Something or other remains. We go on changing our prisons, perhaps not even ever thinking of becoming free someday. That is how the mind plays tricks upon you, because it wants to remain a master, and you, a slave. Unless we realise the how, the process, in our journey from ignorance to knowledge – we will never be able to free ourselves of the bondage we call life. I have heard:
From the giant redwoods sector of California comes the yarn of a truck farmer who decided to buy a new power saw. A logging foreman sold him one that he guaranteed would cut down 20 trees in a single day. A week later a very unhappy farmer came back to report that the power saw must be a faulty one – it averaged only five a day. The foreman grabbed the power saw and plugged it into the nearest outlet. The saw promptly went “bzzz.”
“Hey,” demanded the startled farmer, “what’s that noise?” He was using the power saw without connecting it to any electricity. Then of course, the power saw is not a power saw; it is an ordinary saw. One can go on renouncing, and does so without plugging into one’s innermost core, into the powerhouse – into one’s inner power of understanding. If it is not plugged in there, then nothing much will happen except tiring one out. It is understanding that makes the difference, all the difference.
