'Being geek just means being passionate about something': Happy Geek Pride Day!
Geek Pride Day is around to be observed on 25 May to commemorate the release of Star Wars (1977) and the day is more observed on the internet these days.

Ahead of the observance, I am reminded of the quote of Olivia Munn, who had had said, "A geek isn't the skinny kid with a pocket protector and acne. There can be computer geeks, video game geeks, car geeks, military geeks, and sports geeks. Being a geek just means that you're passionate about something."

The initiative originated in Spain in 2006 as "Di?a del Orgullo Friki" and spread around the world via the Internet. However, it was Tim McEachern who organized Geek Pride Festival in 1998 to popularize the observance.

A hardcore geek engages himself or herself in or discuss computer-related tasks obsessively or with great attention to technical details of computer and the internet. By the commoners, a geek is considered a socially inept person but nonetheless harmless creative person. Slowly, geeks have acquired a socially acceptable role in a technologically advanced society of the present times. So, these days, the word geek typically connotes an expert, an enthusiast, someone obsessed with a hobby or overly intellectual pursuit.

These days, technological geeks exert a powerful influence over the global economy and society by being preferred for senior corporate positions to wield considerable commercial influence.

In 2006, the biggest concentration took place in Madrid, where 300 Geeks demonstrated their pride together and a manifesto was created to celebrate the Day by list of the basic rights and responsibilities of geeks. The Science Channel does a special programming on 25 May. Currently, the day is celebrated across the globe with great enthusiasm and fanfare by geeks.
