Belgian Van Rompuy appointed EU president
Van Rompuy's appointment was unanimously approved by the EU council after Britain dropped the candidature of Tony Blair. EU leaders said that the new team has been chosen with the idea that they leave a room for everyone.
BELGIAN PRIME MINISTER Herman Von Rompuy has been appointed as the first president of the European Union and with a mandate that he gets the continent a greater profile in the world affairs. Catherine Ashton of Britain has been appointed the European Union's foreign policy head in the new team, which was constituted by the European Leaders at a summit in Brussels.
