BELGIAN PRIME MINISTER Herman Von Rompuy has been appointed as the first president of the European Union and with a mandate that he gets the continent a greater profile in the world affairs. Catherine Ashton of Britain has been appointed the European Union's foreign policy head in the new team, which was constituted by the European Leaders at a summit in Brussels.
Von Rompuy's appointment was unanimously approved by the EU council after Britain dropped the candidature of Tony Blair. EU leaders said that the new team has been chosen with the idea that they leave a room for everyone, listen to everyone and create winners.
These posts were created by the EU after the Lisbon treaty in order to give a real face to the EU union as a bloc. EU president will be chairing regular meeting of European Council where regular decisions are take about the policies and decisions of th EU bloc.
Later speaking to media, Van Rompuy said that he would accept this challenge even though he had to give the leadership of his country.
