Chanting means the repetition of the name of God, and is the most convenient practice of remembering the god. The whole universe has been created by the lord by using chants, by using sound. If you read the Bible it speaks about how this universe is created using sound.
We all need food to nourish our body, we need love, care and friendliness to nourish our emotional body and we all need 'prana', the life giving energy to nourish our energy body or pranic body but none of these can work at the vibratory level and we exist at our core at the vibratory level and only chants are capable to take us to that state.
If you look at any religion in this world, chanting has been a tradition. Chanting has played a major role, in fact in ashram life and in daily life chanting can bring about a complete change you feel about yourself. In the morning when you wake and before you think that you are going to do something today, it will be very nice to find few minutes to sit with your eyes in a nice and silent place and close your eyes and express gratitude to nature that provides so much to us.
Chant some mantras while you are meditating, you can see the change in just about five minutes and you can feel the mood, the state of mind, the sharpness of the intellect or the change in the condition of body. All this is from a vibratory prospective. But mantras and sounds have two aspects to them, they have an energy aspect and they have a consciousness aspect.
When you chant a mantra the energy aspect goes inside your system and it awakens the corresponding centers in your body connects you to the universal energy and brings inside you a change in the energy level. The sounds are produced from specific locations in your body and these specific locations connect to specific emotions when chants are done, reported indiainteracts.
