The protesters also burned buses in Darjeeling and Kalimpong. To make matters worse, the police even attacked the people from the fourth estate, where a media personnel was also injured.
"There was no need for such kind of lathi charge, when the situation could have been handled in a peaceful manner. They (Police) could have come out and stated that they would arrest the RAF personnel,” said Waiba. The RAF personnel, Arun Prawanik, of the 2nd Battalion, Barrackpor, who tried to rape the girl has been arrested.
The CRPF personnel has been manning the streets of Darjeeling. The CRPF forces have been deployed by the West Bengal government to maintain peace in the region, but their presence is only creating a hostile atmosphere in the hills, when people are striving for a peaceful movement.
"The deployment of CRPF is a Bengal government sponsored act. The Bengal government is terrorizing the locals through CRPF and are hence trying to shut down the voice of the people,” said Waiba. He further added, “The Bengal government is provoking the Gorkhaland movement to become violent.”
Such kind of incidents will not take time to transform the peaceful movement into a violent one, which the Darjeeling hills fear, for the number of lives that was lost (around 1200), in the Gorkhaland agitation in 1986 still remains afresh.
