'Bengal Leads 2012' - initiative of West Bengal to woo industries
'Bengal Leads 2012' is the latest initiative of the Government of West Bengal to invite industries into the state - its overtures to industry bigwigs till date have not elicited the desired response.

THE FURROWS on Mamata Banerjee’s eyebrows are deepening and she is understandably worried because her pre-poll promises of generating thousands of jobs to wipe out unemployment have fallen flat.

She had been harboring an impression that industries would flock to the state to set West Bengal shining once the dreaded CPM-led left-front government was removed from power. But 8-months down the line she realizes that it was all a pipedream.

Industries are apprehensive of setting up base in West Bengal because apart from the lack of infrastructure in the state, there is a never-ending conflict of interests between various groups. That can never create an atmosphere conducive to do business in.

The ousting of Tata Motors and its NANO project from Singur by the TMC and the new land acquisition Bill of the new government have sent wrong signals to the industry.

They are apprehensive and, even though they respond to invitations of the Chief Minister, and turn up at meetings convened by her, they feel disappointed.

Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee is gradually realizing how the shoe pinches and how the industries are not yet sure of the way things would proceed for industrial revolution in the state of West Bengal.

She is becoming impatient because time and tide waits for none and with every passing day the people are getting disenchanted and the distance between her and the electorate is increasing – she has to think up some means to close the gap.
