A large number of expired LPG gas cylinders are in circulation and are being used by the people all over the country. LPG itself is hazardous, and if it is contained in an already expired cylinder, there are double chances of any mishap occuring.
TODAY AS I was passing by the cylinder distributor in our colony, I happened to notice a cylinder with A-07 marked on it. Confused about the term A-07? Well the A-07 indicates the expiry date of cylinder and not the date when the Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) was filled in, as some may assume.
A large number of expired LPG cylinders are in circulation in the market and are being used by the people all over the country, just because they are unaware of the fact that LPG cylinders also have an expiry date. LPG itself is hazardous and if it is contained in an expired cylinder, there are double chances of any mishap occuring. An expired LPG cylinder should be returned to the dealer. Expired cylinder are not safe to use and may cause accidents. And all necessary steps should be taken to ensure that such accidents are prevented. The consumers should be cautious at the time of accepting any LPG cylinder from the vendor. The expiry date of the cylinders should also be checked before buying like any other product in the market.
How to check the expiry date of an LPG cylinder: On one of the three side stems of the cylinder, the expiry date is coded alpha numerically as A or B or C or D followed by two digits, which indicate the year, eg D-06. The alphabets stand for the quarter of the month:
A for January to March (first quarter)
B for April to June (second quarter)
C for July to September (third quarter)
D for October to December (fourth quarter)
The digits stand for the year till it is valid. Hence D-06 would mean December quarter of 2006. Always be aware that you should check the expiry date of a LPG cylinder to avoid any mishaps. And do remember to share this detail with all you know. This can save many lives, who are unaware of this fact. And please do not accept any expired LPG cylinder from the vendor.
