A MASSIVE protest rocked the home constituency of former Chief Minister GN Azad against installation of electric metre and cable in Bhaderwah town, 200 kms from Jammu, under the leadership of 75-year-old Anara Devi.
On Tuesday morning, women along with children stated protest demonstration at Seri, Bhaderwah when the Power Development Department employees were replacing the electric wires. A huge crowed of social and political leaders joined the protest and later marched on the streets of the town raising anti-government slogans. They blocked the main entry of the Seri Bazaar at Lakshmi Narayan Chowk by burning tyres and raised slogans against the Power Development Department.
While addressing the gathering, various social leaders threatened the government that if electric cable and metres are installed in Bhaderwah, they will boycott the elections. The protesters demanded that the Power Development Department officials should be brought to book as this is evidence of mass bungling and irregularities. While addressing the gathering a 75-year-old lady said that electric cable has not been installed at any place in J&K or in the country till now. This is nothing but harassing the remote area people.
Protests rocked Bhaderwah when some employees of electricity department exchanged heated arguments with the local women. Mujeeb Ali Sheikh, district president of PDP joined the protest and alleged that the employees of the Power Development Department are riding roughshod over the public by cutting electric wires. He claimed that the officials have confiscated more than 1000 metres of costly wire without any legal notice. He also threatened that if the government failed to stop the installation process in rural areas they will launch an anti-government campaign.
Meanwhile, Congress Seva Dal’s district president, Bashir Wani alleged that the department is involved in mass bungling, of which the installation of the electric cables and metres in rural areas, of which this is just one part. He also appealed to the president of Congress Party, Sonia Gandhi and general secretary of Congress, GN Azad to intervene into this matter and stop the installation of these cables and metres. Wani also demanded free electricity in rural areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
