Bharat Ratna and People's President APJ Abdul Kalam laid to rest in Rameswaram: Thousands pay their last tributes
Former President APJ Abdual Kalam, who passed away on Monday, was laid to rest with full state honour and 21 gun salute in Tamil Nadu's Rameswaram today. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and several other political leaders along with thousands of commoners attended Kalam's last rites.

The funeral was held in according to the wishes of APJ Abdul Kalam's family. Kalam's body was taken from the house to the mosque by the personnel of three services with the casket covered with traditional green shawl. A 1.5 acre plot at Paikarumbu became final resting place for the 'People's President'.

The state government has ordered closure of liquor shop and bars today. It also announced a public holiday as a mark of respect to the departed soul. Security has been tightened at Rameswaram as large number of people, including ministers and other dignitaries attended Kalam's last rites.

The Missile man's death witnessed a huge outpouring of grief across the nation. In Delhi thousands of people waited for hours to pay their last respects to him on Tuesday. And a similar situation was witnessed in Rameswaram also, where his body was brought on Wednesday.

The Central government has declared a 7-day national mourning in his honour.
