The GoM is trying to fool the people by announcing a curative petition. No court would entertain such a request. When we have not been able to get Warren Anderson extradited for 26 years.
ALTHOUGH THE relief announced for the gas victims is welcome, but here, the question arises that who is going to bear the cost? It is the Indian exchequer and not Union Carbide or Dow Chemicals. And what signals are we sending out? That, MNCs can come to India, flout all safety norms, kill people and the Indian tax payer will pay the compensation.
The GoM is trying to fool the people by announcing a curative petition. No court would entertain such a request. When we have not been able to get Warren Anderson extradited for 26 years, what magic wand had the GoM found that now it will be able to do so?
Several other questions remain unanswered. Why didn’t the Indian government allow victims to file suits against Union Carbide through American lawyers? They would have got a much better compensation that way. Why did the Indian government sign an out-of-court settlement with the company?
Forget about Anderson, he was not even present in India at the time of the accident. But what were our safety inspectors doing? How did the local authorities give permission for a factory dealing in such hazardous material? Shouldn’t the officials responsible for such issue be held liable?
