Bhopal gas tragedy and TV tamasha
Ever since the Bhopal gas tragedy judgment has been pronounced by the lower court giving two years punishment, media has gone all out digging out as much sensation as possible.
THE MEDIA, governments at the state and Center, the political parties were all aware of the result of the Bhopal Gas trial that took over 25 years. They all knew the highest punishment that could be given under the sections. They all knew that once the Supreme Court ruled that this case is one of negligence and not of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, the course of the trial and punishments possible were clear. If it was a political decision then why did not the media force the government to either come out and confirm this or change its approach? The stalwarts of the opposition who don’t allow the parliament to run on much smaller issues; why they didn’t force the government of the day to share the global compulsions or change their approach about what sections to apply and how to ensure that Anderson would not escape the guilt? The least that the Central government can do is to clearly define its proposed approach now in respect of sections that should have been applied, as against Anderson, appeal to the lower court judgment and any other issue and take the opposition and the nation into confidence.
