The Group will assess the situation in the aftermath of the Bhopal Court verdict and decide on the future course of action to ensure that justice is done to the gas victims.
AS THE war of words between political parties particularly between the BJP and Congress becomes shriller, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has directed the Group of Ministers (GoM), constituted to look into various aspects related to Bhopal gas tragedy to meet immediately.
The Group will assess the situation in the aftermath of the Bhopal Court verdict and decide on the future course of action to ensure that justice is done to the gas victims. There has been a public outrage after a court in Bhopal delivered the sentence in the case convicting the seven accused of mere negligence, a charge that does not carry much weight as compared to the rarity of the crime. It is pertinent to mention that thousands of people were killed and left maimed after a poisonous gas leaked from Union Carbide plant in Bhopal on the ervening night of December 3-4, 1984. There is a growing clamour that the government should demand the extradition of Warren Anderson, the prime accused in the case, who has escaped the law by running away and hiding in America.
