Bhopal Police official demanded bribe to trace missing medals of martyred Army captain
In Bhopal, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will honour martyrs and open a war memorial today, the mother of a martyred Army captain has alleged that a police official demanded bribe to trace the stolen bravery award of her son.
According to Nirmala Sharma, mother of martyr Devashish Sharma, her son was killed on December 10, 1994, during Operation Rakshak and was awarded the Kirti Chakra and Virata Chakra medals. But, the medals were stolen in October 2014 by burglars who broke into her house.

After three months of the incident, 65-year-old Nirmala filed a police complaint. Shockingly, the police from Shahpur police station demanded bribe to find the stolen medals.

She said, "I had gone to the Bharat Bhawan and my house was locked. When I returned, burglars had broken into my home and stolen the medals. A police officer started demanding what he called processing fees to look into my case. But I said no," reported NDTV.

This incident had happened last year, but the story has emerged in the media recently, that too before the Prime Minister's visit to the state.

After the incident appeared in the media, State Home Minister Bhupindra Singh, immediately responded over the issue and visited Nirmala and assured her that he would bring the matter to the consideration of home and defense ministers of the country. He even promised her that the police official who asked for the bribe will be suspended.

But, Nirmala, who has lost the hopes of getting back the original medals is requesting the government to issue duplicate medals. She said, "Forget about original, all I want is duplicate medals. I will be really thankful to govt if they help me."

Singh assured that he will talk to the higher authorities regarding the duplicate medal, "I'll bring this before Home & Defense Minister, there must a provision in army to provide duplicate medals."
