About one million people are affected in Pakistan by the disaster, the UN estimated on Saturday, July 31. The officials said it was the worst deluge since 1929. The official also said that rescue workers tried to reach tens of thousands of people stranded in the north-western Pakistan.

According to the UN report, the latest flood in Pakistan have caused major damage to infrastructure, including roads and at least 45 bridges, as wells as to thousands of homes.

Pakistan Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani took an aerial tour of the flood affected northwest province on Friday and ordered to rescue people and provide food supplies to those at safe locations.

The military said in a statement that Army troops equipped with life jackets, motorboats and heavy rafts were called on to help move families to safe locations.

The torrential rains this week have caused rivers to overflow throughout Northwestern Pakistan causing severe flooding and destruction of dams, roads, schools, hitting food supplies and homes in hundreds of towns and villages.

The flooding deaths come after a plane crashed into mountains on Wednesday July 28 in heavy rain near the capital Islamabad, in which all the 152 people including cabin crew were killed.
