Maoists in eastern India continue to launch attacks on government property with impunity. After killing over 30 Greyhound jawans in Orissa recently, the rebels triggered an explosion in a BDO office and blasted rail tracks in Jamui district Bihar.
THERE IS no let up in Maoist mayhem in the eastern states of the country. The rebels went on the rampage and blew up railway tracks and a part of a government complex where the office of the Block Development Officer, Circle Officer and the local police station is located in Bihar’s Jamui district in the wee hours of Friday.
The Naxalite attack was in protest against the recent arrest of their self-styled area commander. Using dynamites, the rebels triggered an explosion in the government complex at Lakshmipur in Jamui district, which had the offices of the BDO, the Circle Officer and the local police station. A portion of the office was damaged. The rebels, however, had to beat a retreat after the police and the Special Auxiliary Police personnel went after them, senior police officials told the local media.
The Maoists called a 24-hour bandh in five East Bihar districts - Jamui, Munger, Bhagalpur, Banka and Lakhisarai to protest the arrest of their leader on July 6. Train services on the Patna-Howrah section received a jolt when a large band of Maoists triggered explosions on the up and down railway tracks between Narganjo and Ghorparan stations under the jurisdiction of the Eastern Railway early on Friday. The attack was timed for 1 am, according to Eastern Railway sources. Railways said six trains including the Howrah-Delhi Lal Quila Express and Gorakhpur-Hatia Maurya Express ground to a halt in Jhajha and Jasidih railway stations. Operating in batches, the rebels earlier, around midnight, blasted the up railway track near Ghoghi-Bariarpur village on the Jamalpur-Kiul section in Munger district. The police defused an explosive which failed to go off. Here again rail services were disrupted following damage to the tracks.
