Responding to the letter Vice Chancellor Dr P K Abdul Azis expressed his gratitude to Nitish Kumar. The VC said,“We would now like to proceed on a fast track, so that we would be able to open the special centre from the next academic session, starting from July 2010.”
He also thanked the local MP for his help in the matter and was grateful for his continued interaction with Chief minister. It should be noted that the Bihar government had earlier offered 100 acres of land but, based on the representation made by the AMU vice chancellor, the offer has now been increased to 250 acres of land.
The news of land allotment was received with jubilation and excitement by the university fraternity. Prof Ekram Husain, a senior faculty member said that after Murshidabad in West Bengal and Malappuram in Kerala, the special centre that would come up here, would ensure that the university takes all steps to increase the reach of education to far flung regions.
The AMU branch is a boon for the people of Kishanganj, which is an educationally backward district. Mohammad Rafiquddin, former regional manager of Land Development Bank, said that the university will be of great help, especially to the people of Purnea division and it will open new windows of opportunities for girl students, whose parents were apprehensive in sending their daughters to other cities for higher education.
“The long-cherished dream of the people of Kishanganj is going to materialise”, said senior Congress leader, Sadiq Samdani. A team of university officials will be visiting the Kishanganj site very soon and would submit an action plan to accelerate the process and to bring it on fast track.
