People were seen coming out in large numbers and long queues are expected at polling booths in in Madhubani, Madhepura, Supaul, Kishanganj, Katihar, Purnia, Araria and Saharsa districts. A large number of elederly men and women were seen at booths all set to exercise their franchise. A presiding officer died of cardiac arrest at a booth at Pranpur in Katihar district before polling. A replacement was sent and polling continued at the booth as per schedule.
Earlier, the first phase of Bihar Assembly poll for the 47 assembly constituencies begun at 7 am in the morning and it would come to a close at 5 pm. The polling will end at 3 pm in the Maoist-hit constituencies in the first phase. Bihar Assembly election will decide the fate of the five years regime of Nitish Kumar led NDA government and also the main opposition lead by Lalu Prasad Yadav and Ram Vilas Paswan. Ruling JD-U and BJP are contesting in 26 and 21 assembly segments, whereas, RJD and ally LJP are contesting in 31 and 16 seats. Congress is contesting in all the 47 assembly seats.
The 47 constituencies of first phase of Bihar Assembly polls are spread over Saharsa, Madhepura, Madhubani, Supaul, Purnia, Araria, Katihar and Kishanganj districts.
