The theme of this year's International Women's Day, 'Universal Adult Franchise and Right to Education and Health' was dealt at length in the open session by various distinguished speakers present on the occasion.
THE SUB-divisional Women Cell, Bilasipara and Sapatgram College joined hands with Brihottor Sapatgram Mahila Yeikya Mancha in observing the 100th International Women’s Day at Sapatgram town of Bilasipara sub-division on March 8, 2011, with a day-long programme.
The day is celebrated worldwide to commemorate the achievements of women, discuss the problems faced by them and to create awareness about the rights of women in all sections of society.The highlights of the day were- awareness programme on ‘women empowerment’ and free health camp. The health camp was organised under the guidance and supervision of Dr KK Nath, health officer, Sapatgram SHC. The emergency medical technician, Hasan Basir Ahmed led the ‘Mrityunjoy-108 emergency response service’ team to impart First-Aid training to women of the region that day.

The open session was chaired by Padma Guha Agarwala, convener and president, Brihottor Sapatgram Mahila Yeikya Mancha. As chief guest, the child development and project officer, Mahamaya development block, Kanak Chandra Goswami graced the programme. In his lecture, Goswami traced the history of the observance of the day. Moreover, he discussed various subjects related to women, such as- exploitation at home and workplace, increasing violence against women and lack of awareness about the legal provisions for securing women’s rights of education and health.As part of the observation of the day, the organising committee felicitated two students of Sapatgram College, namely Gita Rani Kalita and Nur Akhtara Begum, who brought laurels to the entire sub-division by emerging as successful rangers in the ‘Rastrapati Award Testing Camp’ held from November 19 to 23, 2010, at Bharat Scouts and Guides, New Delhi.
