Bing: Latest web-search engine on the Internet
Popularly known as decision engine, Bing is the latest web-search engine on the Internet. Bing was preceded by Live Search, Windows Live Search and MSN Search. As all other search engines available on net, Bing too follows the same job description.
BING! NO, we are not talking about Chandler Bing! Popularly known as the decision engine, Bing is the latest web-search engine on the Internet. Created and marketed by Microsoft, Bing was preceded by Live Search, Windows Live Search and MSN Search. As all other search engines available on the net, Bing too follows the same job description: to provide free information on any and every topic. However, Bing lives up to its name of being the decision engine by disallowing the search of pornographic material.

Bing vs Google

Google searches for the text on the net, whereas Bing interprets the text into something that will make sense. For example, if someone types ‘Ahmedabad to Pune’ on Google, they are probably searching for travel options. But, Google more often will not find all literature that contains the three words, instead of understanding the phrase. Microsoft understood this flaw of Google and thus came up with a better alternative in the form of Bing! But, yes Bing is not the place to research at for an assignment. Google still rules the roost there. The basic difference between Bing and Google lies in the algorithm used. This is what is responsible for the dissimilarity in the results even when the same thing is searched for.

The layout of the two sites is also as different as chalk and cheese. Google is bare and gives you a feeling that it is a ‘no nonsense’ search engine which only provides the information about a certain keyword. On the other hand, Bing emanates a familiarity with the user. Even after you enter a keyword, the related searches bar on Bing appears at the very top of the searches while it comes at the bottom of the page on Google. This tilts the scales a little in the favour of Bing as it has been observed that the proportion of people, who move on to the related links from the primary results, is more on Bing.
To get the best of both worlds, one can log on to Bingle.com, which is an amalgamation of Bing and google. It simultaneously searches the required information on both the engines and then gives a comparative study to the reader.
Services
  • Bing offers a lot of different services to choose from, namely
Bing Health, which helps the user to search for complex medical terms and conditions with considerable ease.
  • Bing Images allows the user to search for images from all over the globe, which are relevant to the keyword. Pornographic images too are banned.
  • Bing Local helps the user in finding about the local information, which may not come up in the generalised version.
  • Bing Maps, which as the name suggests help the users to locate any destination around the globe.
  • Bing News, this news aggregator gives out the latest happenings around the world.
  • Bing Shopping gives out a list of all the marketers and online sellers for all sorts of goods and merchandise.
  • Bing xRank is another application, which is especially for research on celebrities.
  • Bing seems to have had a very promising start for a newbie on the Internet, now we only have to see if it lives up to the expectations of the computer users, or whether it fades away into non-existence like others who have tried competing with Google.

Come on: are you just reproducing from the Bing publicity documentation? Did you try searching for "Ahmedabad to Pune" on Google? The first link it gives me on Google is flight information with accompanying links to travel sites. Your description of how search engines work is from before year 2000 (which is why there were a lot of spam sites around then that just repeated popular search strings to game the search engines). Google became popular precisely because they didn't just search for strings. Heard of the PageRank algorithm? That was the PhD work on which Google search was founded. Google it and read up :-). Not even trying the search string that you say Google doesn't handle well is sheer laziness.
