Biotechnology sector in India is now worth 3.8 billion dollars
The Biotechnology sector in India has reached an estimated size of 3.8 billion US dollars in value over financial year 2012, and is expected to touch the figure of 10.4 billion US dollars by 2015.
India offers a combination of skilled manpower, low costs and a large pool of existing Research and Development institutions to the global biotechnology industry.
India is ranked amongst the top 12 biotech destinations in the world - and is ranked second to China in Asia. It is the largest producer in the world of the recombinant Hepatitis B vaccine. Five segments presently constitute the Indian bio-technology sector - bio-services, bio pharmaceuticals, bio-industrial, bio-agriculture, and bio-informatics.
The segment of bio-pharma forms 60 per cent of total revenues in India's biotechnology sector. As per data available with the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, the Indian drugs and pharmaceutical sector recorded FDI worth 3.2 billion dollars between April 2011 and January 2012.
