Bipolar disorder: A manic-depressive illness
Bipolar disorder is historically known as manic-depressive disorder. It is a chronic brain disorder, which consists of impairing change in mood, energy, thinking and behavior. It is characterized by cyclic mood swings, where a person oscillates between extreme sadness and happiness.

THIS DISEASE effects approximately 2.6% of population of age 18yrs and older. The rate of development of bipolar disorder is equal both in men and women. This disorder has a hereditary background and the rate of bipolar disorder is more in identical twins than in fraternal (non-identical twins).

Both genetic and environmental factors contribute to bipolar disorder. It often occurs in person's at late teens or in early adult years, most of the cases starts before the age of 25, it may be triggered by a traumatic event such as the death of a family member. Some people may have their first symptoms during childhood and some may develop the symptoms later in life. The symptoms are not easy to find out as they are treated as separate problem but are not recognized as a part of a large problem called brain disorder. Its a long term illness that should be carefully managed throughout a persons life.

Effects of bipolar disorder on children:

This disorder does not effect every child in the same way. The frequency, intensity and duration of a child's symptom and the child's response to treatment vary drastically. This disorder also affects the growth of the child such as the size, shape, and functioning of brain regions and network, pediatric bipolar disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder. Parts of the brain mature at different rates and times and the brain development is not complete till the individual is at a age of 25 or so. The pediatric cases of bipolar disorder are associated with higher cases of suicide as children experience faster mood swing than adults, and exhibit a mixed state of depression and mania, in these cases early diagnosis and proper treatment are necessary for the well being of the child.

Bipolar disorder is a serious and chronic condition. Children and adults should be examined by mental health professionals for proper diagnosis and treatment of the disease. The criteria of diagnosis for bipolar disorder in children are the same as in adults.
