Bird flu scare in Sikkim: Over 1000 birds culled
Over 1,000 chickens have been culled by the health officials in Sikkim, following detection of bird flu at Rabangla district. To prevent bird flu from spreading further, health officials have undertaken a massive awareness campaign in the state.
AUTHORITIES IN Sikkim have culled over 1,000 poultry chickens as bird flu scare spread in this Northeast part of India. So far, 1,139 birds have been culled since January 20, health officials reported.

The flu was first detected at Rabangla district of South Sikkim, on January 18. Reports suggest that over 157 houses owning backyard poultry were affected in the district. The officials also destroyed the eggs of the chickens.

Following the detection, health ministry rushed a central rapid response team to Gangtok for assisting the state health authorities in planning the containment measures.

The team arrived at Rabangla with 5,000 surgical masks, 6,000 Oseltamivir capsules, 100 personal protective equipment and 100 N-95 masks and are now monitoring the situation.

To prevent the bird flu from spreading further, health officials have undertaken a massive awareness campaign in the state - by distributing pamphlets and making announcements through radio and television channels.

However, so far not a single human case of bird flu has been reported.

Meanwhile, avian influenza was reported in Assam, on November 27, and in West Bengal almost three weeks later, after which a total of 483,726 birds were culled in the two states.
