BJP and the RSS are trying to destroy Northeast, says Rahul Gandhi during a rally in Guwahati
Congress President Rahul Gandhi has accused the BJP and its ideological mentor the Rashtriya Sawayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of trying to destroy and destabilize Assam and the Northeast.

Sounding poll bugle of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in a massive rally at Khanapara in Guwahati on Tuesday afternoon, the Congress President alleged that the BJP has no intention for executing the National Register of Citizens (NRC). The NRC updating work is underway in Assam under the supervision of the Supreme Court of India.

Pointing at the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, Gandhi said, "We would not let BJP and RSS to destroy the Northeast. They are (BJP and RSS) anti-Assam and anti-Northeast. For our firm stand they could not pass the Bill in the Rajya Sabha. The Bill is an anti-Assam and anti-Northeast bill."

He also alleged that the BJP is an anti-farmer party. "We waived off farmers' loans in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan immediately after forming government in these states. But the BJP did not do that citing fund crunch. Despite that they wrote off big industrialists' loans. They helped Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi, and Mehul Choksi etc. to flee the country. " Gandhi said. He added that the Congress would always stand with the people of the Northeast.

The Congress president assured that his party would make sure that no genuine Indian citizen is left behind in the updated NRC. He also promised minimum income guarantee to the economically weaker sections if his party was voted to power in upcoming general elections. "We never gave any false promise unlike the BJP. They (BJP) made only false promise." He added amidst the claps of thousands of Congress workers and supporters. The Congress President said that his party would create history in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Ripun Bora were also present on the occasion. The Congress President, on Tuesday, had arrived in Guwahati on a one-day schedule to address the rally.
