Bharatiya Janata Party today announced the names of 136 candidates to be fielded in the ensuing Karnataka elections. The party will field 80 new faces in the Karnataka polls, beginning on May 10, even as it expressed hope of an electoral alliance with Janata Dal-United.

The polling for the 224 assembly seats will take place in the three phases on May 10, 16 and 22.  The party said that the Central Election Committee of the BJP met on Thursday evening in New Delhi and finalised the list of 136 candidates. Party president Rajnath Singh, Leader of Opposition, LK Advani jointly chaired the meeting which cleared the ‘136 candidates for all the three phases’.

The BJP list contains 44 candidates for the first phase of elections, which will take place for 89 seats on May 10. However, the breakup for the remaining 92 candidates was not given by the party.

Whether the party will field more candidates or leave the rest of seats for JD-U was left to speculation as BJP general secretary, Anantha Kumar, did not take a clear stand on the issue. He however expressed hope that an electoral understanding would take place between BJP and JD-U on the basis of ground realities.

BS Yeddyurappa, who is the chief ministerial candidate of the party, will contest from Shikaripura. A number of prominent politicians, who have crossed over from other parties have also been given seats.
