Khanna was detained while he was trying to enter Kathua district along with his supporters in Lakhanpur belt this morning, the official said adding he was urged to return in view of the prevailing situation in Jammu and Kashmir.
Jaitley along with Khanna and state BJP President Jugal Kishore was due to visit Kishtwar area of Jammu for an on the spot assessment of the sitution. Kishore along with over 30 state leaders and activists shouted anti-government slogans while protesting Jaitley's detention.
"Heard that Arun Jaitley and other opposition leaders are not allowed to go to Kishtwar. This is undemocratic," Modi tweeted.
He also said, "Stopping opposition leaders in this manner shows that the government does not want the truth about the Kishtwar violence to come out."
Condemning arrests, BJP National Spokesperson Smt. Meenakshi Lekhi said that stopping the leader of Opposition of the Rajya Sabha who was going to assess the situation is undemocratic and reminding them of 1953 when Sh. SP Mookherjee was arrested in 1953 by Shaikh Abdullah when he went to Kashmir
Expressing concern, she said that the clashes which occurred in Kishtwar and other areas in J&K are very disturbing and have shown that the Jammu and Kashmir Government needs to be more proactive in protective and preventive measures to secure the lives of the common people. As per reports 3 people have been killed and more than 20 injured. Equally disturbing are reports both from people on the spot as well as news Media that the MOS Home Mr. Sajjad Kitchloo was in the area where the trouble happened and was at best a mute spectator and at worst involved in the clashes.
