BJP hunchos are playing a safe game in 2014 Lok Sabha Polls
BJP is claiming that there is a wave all over India in favour of Narendra Modi as PM and BJP led NDA for forming the next government. Most opinion polls have predicted (honestly or dishonestly) that BJP alone will win 200 to 220 seats. Yet there is panic among the BJP's top leadership.

The four top leaders of BJP - Narendra Modi, Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj have opted to contest from safe seats. In the process all these stalwarts except Sushma Swaraj have forced senior sitting party MPs to vacate their seats and contest from unfamiliar seats.

Narendra Modi

Narendra Modi is BJP's anointed PM candidate. He has the blessings of RSS, Vishya Hindu Parishad and other organizations of the Sangh Parivar. He is endorsed by Adani, Ambani and most of the other big industrial houses and foreign investors. Over Rs 400 crores is being spent on building brand Modi. Modi bags headlines in every newspaper and is a subject of discussion on every news channel.

Modi smiles at us from hoardings on every street. A fleet of helicopters and private planes ferry him from one rally site to another to enable him to abuse the Congress and the Gandhi family. (There is of course no clarity on who is paying for them). Every opinion poll (rigged or not) project him as the most popular candidate for the PM's chair. Yet he is running scared. He has decided to contest from two seats, one from his home state in Gujrat and the other from Varanasi, the ancient seat of Hindutya.

In the process, he has no qualms about evicting Murli Manohar Joshi, sitting MP and veteran leader against his wishes. It is not out of place to mention that Rahul Gandhi and Arvind Kejriwal are contesting from only one seat. Mulayam Singh, who is running scared like Modi, is contesting from two seats.

Rajnath Singh

Rajnath Singh is the BJP President and the sitting MP from Gaziabad. He has been so unnerved by the rise of Aam Admi Party and Kejriwal that he has decided that it is better to be safe than sorry. So he has nominated General (Retd) V K Singh (an outsider) to contest from Gaziabad and he fled to Lucknow, which is considered a traditional safe seat for BJP. In the process he has evicted the sitting MP and senior BJP leader Lalji Tandon against his wishes. What is the use of being the party president if you cannot have your way and find a safe seat for yourself?

Arun Jaitley

Arun Jaitley is a sitting Rajya Sabha MP. One wonders why he has decided to contest Lok Sabha elections. Is it because he nurtures Prime Ministerial ambitions and needs to prove his electoral prowess, popularity and superiority over Sushma Sawaraj? In search of a safe seat, he has evicted Sidhu, the sitting MP of Amritsar. Seniority must be respected, is it not? Who cares for poor Sidhu?

Sushma Swaraj

Sushma Swaraj has not changed her seat. She found a safe seat in Madhya Pradesh in 2004. Though from Ambala, she cannot risk contesting from the state or from Delhi. In any case, she has no future in male dominated RSS backed BJP. If she was more adventurous, she could have joined AAP.

Conclusion

BJP leaders are seeking safe seats because in their heart of hearts, they know that there is no BJP wave. They know that Modi lacks the qualities required for being a PM. They are hoping against hope that the Indian people will be fooled by their advertising blitz and vote BJP to power. I hope the people of India will understand the true color and character of Narendra Modi, Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitetly and Sushma Swaraj and banish them from the parliament.
