BJP MLA Ganesh Joshi arrested for breaking horse Shaktiman's leg
The BJP MLA Ganesh Joshi, who has been accused of breaking the leg of police horse Shaktiman was arrested in Dehradun on Friday morning. The Mussorie MLA is facing three separate police cases for allegedly attacking and breaking the leg of Shaktiman, a 14-year old Uttarakhand police horse on Monday, March 14 during a protest rally in Dehradun.

Shaktiman became a household name after the video showing a stick wielding Joshi attacking the horse went viral on social media, attracting a lot of attention and triggering widespread condemnation against Joshi for his barbaric act.

Shaktiman underwent a surgery yesterday in which a team of veterinarians amputated its damaged hind limb due to fear of spread of gangrene. The horse has now been placed with a temporary prosthetic limb, which will replaced with a permanent prosthetic limb after a few days.

The police have said that Shaktiman will remain with the force, despite a lot of requests pouring in for its adoption. Senior superintendent of police Sadanand Date said that the police intended to keep Shaktiman in his home (stable) as he had served the Uttarakhand police for 10 years.

Union Minister and animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi has called for Joshi's expulsion from the party. However Joshi denied the charges and claimed to be innocent.

This is the second arrest in the case as BJP worker Pradeep Bora had been arrested earlier on Thursday for the assault on the horse from Haldwani. Bora was also part of the protests led by Joshi on Monday during which the assault on Shaktiman took place.

Maneka Gandhi had asked the Uttarakhand Director General of Police (DGP) BS Sidhu to take strictest action against Joshi.
