JUST A day after senior leader Sushma Swaraj described the internal situation within the BJP as volcanic, the simmering volcano within the BJP seems to have erupted on Tuesday (June 16).
Signalling deeper fissures within the party, BJP Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley today, resigned from the post of party general secretary.
Jaitley's resignation, which has come ostensibly in deference to the principle of 'one person, one post' has much more than what meets the eye, said political observers.
Coming close after the resignation of party leader Yashwant Sinha and an outburst by senior leader Jaswant Singh, Jaitley's resignation will send the Saffron party in a further spin amidst calls for accountability and introspection over the General Election debacle.
Latest salvo against the top BJP leadership was fired by senior leader, Yashwant Sinha, who called for resignations of the top leadership and and also introspection over reasons, which led to BJP's defeat.
In an oblique reference to the elevation of Jaitley to position of leader of opposition, Sinha had questioned the manner in which some party leaders were hankering for party posts and were being rewarded despite electoral losses.
Earlier, senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh had called for accountability within the party, after the loss in the general elections.
BJP sources said that Jaitley resignation was in line with the principal of 'One person, One post' but admitted that a section of party is definitely unhappy with the party leadership over the manner in which election campaign was run, leading to defeat at the hustings. More than that some BJP leaders also want that those responsible for this defeat should be held accountable for this defeat.
