By fielding a Muslim candidate, TRS tried to win over minority votes. However, government employees, teachers, students and other Telangana activists openly supported BJP. Being the only national party which is supporting struggle for separate Telangana state, its leaders tried to convince the people only they can bring about a separate state.
In the remaining six assembly constituencies, for which elections were held on March 18th, while TRS has won in four seats, independent candidates supported by TRS and BJP has one another seat and Y S R Congress party won the remaining seat.
All these by-elections were necessited with the resignation or disqualification of Congress and Telugu Deasm members, who failed to win even a single seat. The by-poll in Mahaboobnagar was necessitated due to the death of independent candidate, who had won in the last elections.
In all six seats in Telangana region, except in Mahaboobnagar, in all other seats TRS and its supported candidates have won. Mahaboobnagar became point of controversy among TRS and BJP since the beginning of by-elections, as TRS announced its candidate without consulting BJP, which was eying on this seat and also without consulting groups supporting Telangana agitation.
By putting a Muslim candidate, TRS tried to win over minority votes. However, government employees, teachers, students and other Telangana activists openly supported BJP. Being the only national party which is supporting struggle for separate Telangana state, its leaders tried to convince the people they can only bring separate state. They also tried to project TRS’s failures to bring separate state though people have been supporting that party since a long time.
The result also projected people’s discontent against TRS’s unilaterally attitude without attempting to project a united fight for the separate statehood by bringing together all pro-Telangana forces.
