BJP's sweet 'suit-boot' revenge: Rahul Gandhi condemned for wearing Burberry jacket worth Rs 70,000
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) extracted sweet revenge by taking a jibe at Congress' newly appointed national President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday, after he was seen wearing an exorbitantly priced Burberry black jacket, costing nearly Rs 70,000.

Gandhi was spotted at a music concert held in poll-bound Meghalaya wearing the pricey jacket. The BJP wasted no time in attacking the Congress chief with the party's Meghalaya unit highlighting the issue on Twitter with a photo of the Gandhi scion donning the expensive jacket at a rock concert in Shillong.

"So @OfficeOfRG , soot(pun intended!)-boot ki sarkar with 'black' money fleeced from Meghalayan State exchequer by rampant corruption? Instead of singing away our woes, you could have given a report card of your inefficient govt in Meghalaya! Your indifference mocks us!" wrote Meghalaya BJP below the picture which was paired with the original jacket's photo and price.

The jacket is two-in-one down puffer jacket from the British luxury fashion brand 'Burberry', which is known for its steep prices and high quality. On the Bloomingdales website, the cost of the jacket is listed at approximately Rs 68,145 ($995).

In the meanwhile, on Wednesday, senior Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury laughed off the controversy over Rahul Gandhi's jacket by claiming that a similar jacket could be bought for as little as Rs 700. She said, "I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the desperation of the BJP. They have actually got the people searching online for the rate. I can show you the same jacket for Rs 700."

Evidently, BJP's tweet is being seen as a counter-attack to Rahul Gandhi's "suit-boot" remark at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had worn a monogrammed suit during a meeting with US President Barack Obama in 2015. However, the suit was later auctioned. Although PM Modi's suit had gone under the hammer with a base price of Rs 11 lakh, it had finally fetched Rs 4.31 crore in the auction.

The BJP's retaliatory tweet comes close at the heels of the Congress President's visit to Shillong to kick-off the election campaign of his party in Meghalaya.

The legislative election for the 60-member state Assembly will take place on February 27 along with Nagaland and the results will be declared on March 3, 2018.
